Dragon Fly
Got back around 1 this afternoon and putz around taking pictures of my stash and unpacking. Brian happened to go outside and I hear him say in an odd voice "ok, so this is unusual." I get up and immediately insist on a photo, because, well...INSECTS IN MICHIGAN SHOULDN'T GET THIS BIG!!!

From the tip of it's upper legs to the bottom of the thingy hanging from its abdomen, this prettily decorated monster is a full 4" long.

I'm attempting to figure out what it is. But boy is it pretty!

Update on the fuzz fest later when I finish the photos.

Actually, the wings were more like a fly than a dragonfly or damselfly. My favorite librarian found it for me, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ichneumon_wasp It's a type of parasitic wasp!

Ichneumon wasp
Megarhyssa macrurus

Non-stinging wasp that feeds on grubs and sometimes spiders. Habitat is dead deciduous trees. The long "tail" is her ovipositor.

Yay Order Hymenoptera!

*laugh* 30 seconds earlier and I would have credited the find to you!

I should have figured you'd know!

I'm really surprised that we didn't see you there. It was much smaller this year than last year, and with only those couple of buildings, I was sure I'd run into you kids. Maybe next time. :)
