On Friday, while downstairs, Brian discovered one of the little spotted salamanders
that we enjoy finding outside. He thinks the little guy probably came through the drain and looked rather dried out. When he went to pick it up, it squirmed around showing it was still alive. The weather outside was bitter and he knew that the poor critter wouldn't survive to hibernate with the turn to the below normal cold spell.
So, he brought the little guy upstairs and put him in the orchid pot that sits in the kitchen garden window. He slipped into the bark and disappeared. Hopefully, he'll be able to survive there over the winter. Of course, my darling husband with the dark sense of humor thinks that one of two things will happen. Either our tiny rescue will feed on the occasional gnats from the other outside plants that overwinter in the window, or he'll provide excellent natural fertilizer for the orchid.
Now, the funny part. Brian forgot to tell me about this until Saturday afternoon. It's a DAMNED good thing I didn't find it on my own, or I think I would have totally freaked out!
In all, I rather like knowing the little guy is there. We shall call him Spot.
