Last week I was talking to mirloc about perceptions. He's seen active combat and served in two different branches of the armed forces. During the Cold War, it was really drilled into them how the Russians were despicable and worthy of only contempt.

During WWII, we had the interment camps for the Japanese.

These days, we're encouraged to scrutinize anyone of middle eastern descent.

Personally, the only group of people that I single out to despise are "humans", and in particular, political leaders.

I watched Diane Sawyer interview the leader of Iran. We call him arrogant and a bully. He calls Bush the same. It pisses me off that these people speak for their countries when I'm pretty certain that they only speak for themselves. I know that they aren't speaking for me.

I boggle at how poorly people are treated, everywhere. How ethnic groups and genders are treated differently. I simply cannot fathom what makes one person superior to any other if all you're looking at is genetics.

If I had the ability to implement one change, it would be for the world to view each person as no better or worse than any other until their actions prove otherwise.

In terms of biology, the human race is a virulent cancer.

Thank you, Deb, for voicing something that has been much on my mind the last couple of weeks (while I've been busy venting smaller, stupider rants). I've recently had to defend my choices to patronize a local middle eastern establishment. "You know they support the Taliban, don't you?". And I was deeply disturbed yesterday to hear a report on the rapid growth of hate groups.

Hate is such an alien emotion to me. I just don't get it.

The truly horrible thing about hate is that it is an establishment of thought and has been for eons. While it is unfortunate, we as a race (I mean all of humanity here) are fortunate to have people like you that try and keep a balance by countering hatred at any opportunity. I am no stranger to hatred, fear, distrust, discrimination, and so many of the ugly things the human race has to offer from the vast and seemingly boundless pit of ignorance that the human race has created out of complacency and dare I say it, sheer laziness.

When I was on the road with Faire, I was a number of times refused service at restaurants, gas stations, you name it. Yup, one of them dern Gypsy folk. Add to that being gay and pagan, things can get ugly. I've been in my share of fist fights. Never started them directly unless you count my unwillingness to back down as a matter of principle.

Living where I do now, in a town that boasts the highest concentration of Arabic peoples outside of the Middle East, I have found something wonderful. My neighbours, and in this I mean the populace in general of where I live, are wonderful people. They laugh, sing, pray, have families... the streets here often simply come alive with celebration thanks to the sheer passion of these people. I love it here for that reason. It is not just our leaders however that is the problem, it is us. Until we can as a race find the courage to let go of the things that make us so, for lack of a better term, ugly I am thankful there are people like you.

Speaking of biology...

I think parts of the human brain developed too fast. The parts that create polluting machines.. weapons.. chemicals that poison our environment etc, grew too fast. The parts of logic, reason, and perhaps the part of the brain that understand impacts of actions is doing some catch up.

For being as civilized as we claim to be, there's some basics that humans as whole dont seem to get. We're literally poisoning our backyard.

..i think I'll stop there before I rant n rave too much.
