Gift idea?

Gift box
Good friends of mine, Chris and Brig have an almost 13 year old son. He's one very sick little critter at the moment. Had a blood transfusion last night and they are still trying to figure out exactly why his RBC is falling daily. He's feeling like an abused pin cushion right now.

I want to send something to the hospital, but I'm really unsure what an almost 13 year old boy would like. He's an incredibly smart, reserved little guy, so nothing cutsie will do.

Does anyone have any ideas?

EDIT: Thank you for all the lovely recommendations. I did have a moment of divine inspiration, and the gift is on it's way.

Unfortunately, they are doing nutritional supplements to get him to stop losing weight. The problem appears to be manifest in his colon.

It's really tough, too, because I know he's weak.

Maybe some books? If he's into that, the Hitchhiker's Trilogy could help keep his mind off things.

puzzle books? sudoku? not the cheesy kid stuff, but stuff from Mensa or other smarty pants type places. hand-held trivia games?

if he's not a reader, what about a playaway?

Wow! That poor kid! I'll keep him and the family in my thoughts.

I have the hardest time buying for boys that age. Books would be my first thought, but you kind of have to know if and what he likes to read.

What about a snap-together model of something? (Or a regular one if glue and paint fumes won't bother other folks there.) ...Of course, *I* am thinking a Gundam would be awesome, :) But any kind of detailed snap-together model might keep him occupied for a while.
