Went for my 2 week follow up from the surgery. Doc said that the knee looks as good as is possible at this point (which is really good...no swelling, no pain, no limp).

however (and this is doing a very slow sink-in to my subconscious here)...

I have a considerable amount of patella arthritis (which is behind the kneecap). He has told me that I can't do more than the occasional bike ride, to avoid stairs, no squats...and to keep the leg extended rather than bent every moment I can. This will cut down on the wear and tear and prolong me keeping my original parts.

I am not interested in a sedentary lifestyle, so he has me set up for 2 weeks of 3 day a week Physical Therapy to learn how to make my knee stronger without wearing it out further.

I'm just sort letting this soak in. The knee feels great. I want to keep that for as long as I can. I'm only 45, but he said my knee is about 65.

*contemplates*

EDIT: I guess I'm not regretting anything that got me into this shape. "Life should NOT be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an attractive and well preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways, chocolate in one hand, martini in the other, body thoroughly used up, totally worn out"

I just need a martini.

I'm glad you're on the mend!

I fear for my knees...badly. I know I could be so much more active if I actually got (at least) the right one fixed, but I just can't have any downtime with my work. I was supposed to have surgery when I was *16* but I was a chicken and of course, made the same protest of "i'm too busy"... one a type A... ;)

Moral of the story, don't start being a soccer goalkeeper when you're 8 years old. I had to "retire" at 18 right as I was training w/ the nat'l team. Stupid sports!

I can feel the grinding when I bend and it'd be nice to not have to take handfuls of nsaids every few days. :/

You were wise to get it done when it started causing you problems, I applaud your cojones. ;)

Holy Shit! We're going to the grave with a martini AND chocolate for sure!!! I think I'm pretty damn close with the Bacardi Razz n Coke!!! And don't forget the Hershey bar and all the leftover fudge from the holidays!

Make the most of your physical therapy, though it's a pain, it really will help... delaying that desire to the grave because of pain... I KNOW this one. Keep drinking the martini's though, it helps get through the rehab (physical, not alcohol rehab, hehehe) Love you Deb.

What damages knees like that?

A friend of mine had to have surgery when he was 21. I wondered if it was because he went skiing a lot as he was growing up.
